before and after: computer desk

thifted. ugly. brown. old. veneer. $20.

before and after: computer desk

functional. pretty. sturdy. revived. teal!

  • -chair is an antique find made form an old trough.
  • -blanket, picture frames and both lamps are thrifted.
  • -the map is of colorado springs (macvan maps; $10) (borders are a piece of molding from the hardware store that i spray painted black and stapled to the map to for easy hanging).
  • top picture is a piece of silk that i couldn’t turn down at the fabric store- so i framed it!

before and after: computer desk

i refinished the desk by starting with a really good primer that would adhere to shiny surfaces (without sanding).  then, i painted it using two coats of teal latex paint.  once dry, i hit all the corners with a sander to give it that ‘new but old’ look and applied a stain to the entire surface (minwax, ebony).  after wiping off the stain and letting it dry, i topped it off with two coats of enamel.  it sounds like a lot, but i was done in two afternoons- and that was just because i had to let things dry!

before and after: computer desk

i lined the drawers with this pretty handmade paper (from the local art store) using permanent spray adhesive on the bottom and a polyurethane top coat to keep it from getting stained, scratched or torn.

before and after: computer desk

(i had to make at least one drawer manly)

before and after: computer desk

i repainted the old brass handles- a good primer, two coats of yellow latex paint, a cover of stain and then a protective coat of enamel (spray paint) did the trick.

before and after: computer desk

so there you have it! it’s where i’m sitting right now- can you picture me in the chair?

happy weekend to you! and be safe on this halloween. :) david signed us up for a 5.5 mile trail run on sunday (eeks!) so i’ll be sure to eat lots of candy afterwards. ;) see you monday! xo, bonnie

diy terrariums

October 29, 2010

diy moss terrarium

yeah for terrariums!!  why do i love them so much?  there’s something about a protected little self sustaining eco system that just makes me happy.   i’m so excited that i finally made some, i’ve been wanting to for months and months- and i think they are so pretty.  they were easy breezy, too- here’s how!

diy moss terrarium

first collect some containers to use as the terrarium.  you could buy them new, but i found these at our local thrift store.  the tall one is a separate top and bottom that i found that thankfully fit together, and the low one came together.  i think it used to be some kind of kitchen gadget? anyways, as long as they are glass and fit together- they’ll work!

diy moss terrarium

then, i spray painted the bottoms black to match each other and filled them with a few rocks to help with drainage.  i just grabbed these right out of our driveway!

next, you’ll need to find some live moss.  i stumbled across this moss during our nature walk, but you can also order it online.

diy moss terrarium

next you’ll need a few little plants to fit inside.  i bought these two succulents ($2.99/ea) from our farmers market.

diy moss terrarium

now, all you have to do it assemble it!  i cut some of the moss to make it fit just right, then wedged the little plants in between the cracks.  i placed a few extra rocks around as well, some to help hold up the plants, but mostly just for looks.

diy moss terrarium

give it a good watering and voila!  you’ll want to keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent it from drying out, and you’ll only need to water it (from the base) about every month or so.  if a plant doesn’t make it- don’t worry, you can just try something else, as they are easy to rework.

i think they are my new favorite pieces in our home!

roasted pumpkin with sage

October 28, 2010

speaking of pumpkins, i made some last night!

roasted pumpkin with sage

so many times pumpkin is used for dessert dishes, wish sugar, cinnamon and everything sweet.  though i love me some pumpkin pie, it was nice to prepare the pumpkin in an unusual way: as-is!  roasting it brings out all the savory flavors of fall and the added sage and nutmeg are perfect for the season.

here’s your recipe- hand stitched just for you! (need it bigger? just click on it!)  xo, bonnie

more furniture reno! actually, there is much much more to come!

before and after: chevron dining table

this little table and mismatching chairs came from our local thrift store, for about $20.

before and after: chevron dining table

after being completely inspired by laurie’s herringbone wall design, i decided to go for it!  i used her same technique, but spray painted the table with gold paint before i taped off the design in beige and khaki.  i topped it off with a 3 coats of protective enamel, stained the legs cherry to match the chairs, and recovered the seats in an ivory and green leaf print.

before and after: chevron dining table

trust me, i know our carpet it terribly ugly and we have doors everywhere, but hey, i’m working with it!  we’ll only be here until april, so the tacky stays.

before and after: chevron dining table

a thrifted mirror in the center used as a tray for the essentials and a pretty fall bouquet for the centerpiece.

toaster

and one picture of toaster, just for kicks! i think we have a knack for turning our dogs into people..

as most of you know by now, we recently relocated to colorado.  but probably less of you know, just how much stuff we had to leave behind!  the only furniture we brought was one book shelf, our mattress and a little dresser. that’s it! so for the last four weeks i’ve been a regular at all the local thrift stores and hardware stores. i’ve been re-purposing, repainting and reupholstering furniture like a mad woman.  and.. i’m VERY excited to begin sharing them with you!  i’ll try not to bombard you with before and after pics, but i have quite a few projects which i’ll be sharing with you over the next few weeks, yeah!

before and after: tv table

first up, a few tv tables! as we’re spilling drinks and dropping crumbs, i couldn’t help but suddenly realized that we needed some of our own.  we often eat piled up on the couch, and never have anywhere to put our dinner, the computer or our coffee.  problem solved! (yes, i forgot to take the ‘true’ before pic, so this is after i’ve primed, boo!).
