48 Things to Know About Sustainable Living

you may remember one of my favorite authors and blog friend, victoria klein from 27 things to know about yoga? well she’s back again! this time, talking about the importance of sustainable living in another book that’s part of the good things to know series. as i’ve read my fair share of ‘how to be green’ books, i can say first hand that 48 things to know about sustainable living is delightfully different than the norm.  she busts myths, sets ground rules and teaches you how sustainable living is easy, affordable and more fulfilling than living a life blind to the importance of sustainability. she then continues with 48 ways to integrate planet-friendly habits into your life that are easily understood and attainable. with resources galore, there’s no one from the advanced eco-conscious to the beginner that won’t come away with life changing information.

you can visit victoria’s website to learn more about her and her latest book plus how to purchase it, as it would make the perfect gift for someone this christmas… or for yourself!

i’m also so excited to say that victoria has also been kind enough to offer a book for a giveaway!

I’ve learned that living more sustainable and eco-friendly is all about living in the now. Being conscious about what you are holding in your hands in the store, thinking what part of this product will be consumed and what is the waste. At home when going to the trash it is about whether said item can be recycled, composted or reused for another function. Just because something can be recycled doesn’t mean its next destination is the refuse bin. So much in life can live many lives before being disposed of or made into something else. Being green is about all of the little conscious acts in the moment.

  • I haven’t bought paper towels in over a year and a half! They’re not even something I think about anymore. The paper products I do buy (toilet paper is really the only one), I buy 100% recycled. I don’t use paper napkins, either.

I’ve used paper plates at a couple of parties, but only once all of my real plates were used up.

  • I also only use biodegradable cleaning products, for both myself and the house :)

  • I’ve decided to make all my christmas gifts this year using all of my leftover crafting supplies (paper, fabric, etc) …forcing myself to not buying anything in addition to what I already have. So far I’ve made gifts for at least 10 people. Hopefully more!!

  • what a wonderful idea, alisa! i should definitely be doing the same. i’m making about half my gifts, but i need to clean out my stash badly!

I use my leftover bits of cotton batting as “swiffer” refills. Saves money and I’ll never run out!

  • I switched over to using 7th generation diapers on my baby…which are so wonderful. I keep toying with cloth diapers, but with 3 boys, my mounds seem quite high enough right now! :) Would love to continue to incorporate ways to live green(er).
