FYI: I started with mint.com, but ended up switching over to wesabe.com because mint had trouble uploading my accounts and never fixed it. Both useful tools, providing they work correctly.

Great post! My business {shoes} started out as an Etsy shop, and now I am working with two different manufacturers. I would agree--having an accurate account of finances/profit margins are a must, esp to afford business growth. The only thing I would add is that you must have a DBA to open a busness account. So, if you haven't filed one, make sure you do so before you stop by the bank :)

I make a point to enter all my receipts and sales into a cash flow spread sheet pretty much as they happen, at least on a weekly basis. I categorize the expense or income on that spreadsheet, and although it's not a P&L, keeping an eye on the bottom line through the year really floats my boat!

I really enjoy and appreciate this column! It helps me to stay focused on the business aspects of creating... I'd also really recommend "The Boss of You," by Bacon and Mears, and "Craft Inc." by Mateo Ilasco. Both offer great financial advice specifically for female entrepreneurs.

Thanks for the weekly inspiration, Bonnie!
