iphone 4

yesterday, i got the iphone 4. for many of you, this phone is old news. however, since verizon is the only company that gets service in our sweet little (and very remote) hometown, we’ve been hearing about the joys of the iphone from all of our at&t friends for, well, seems like forever now. i recognize how silly it is to ‘have‘ to have something that didn’t even exist a few short years ago, but what can i say. i’m a sucker. so when we heard that the ‘phone that changed the world’ was coming to our network, david and i bundled up and headed out to the store with high hopes (but not too high) that we would have success. and we did!

as a long time mac user, it just made sense to add this little guy to my lineup. one of the features i’m most excited about is called facetime, where your calls become video calls between you and the person you’re talking with. the reason i’m so excited is that my mom has ordered the iphone as well (go mom!), and we will soon be talking face to face, even though we’re halfway across the country from each other. how amazing is that?!  plus i’ll be able to see my hubby’s pretty face anytime i call him, and that just makes me happy.

so you might ask, “that’s cool and everything bonnie, but why are you telling us about it?”. welp, that would be because i need your help! you see, apps overwhelm me (a statement i’m sure i’ll be laughing at in about a year). there’s just so many, and no way to find the ones i need that i don’t even know i need! i would like to create an app just for searching for other apps. or maybe there’s already an app for that? ah!! anyways, do you have any suggestions for me? oh smartphone, droid, iphone, ipad users??
here’s what i’m looking for:

- apps that would help streamline my business (blog, etsy, paypal, etc).

- best blogging apps (i’m using wordpress here).

- creative essentials

- photography, editing and design apps

- ways to be more efficient (streamlining tasks, etc).

- anything else i need that i don’t even know i need

- or… anything you have that you couldn’t live without

(here are the apps i’ve already added, just so you know: pandora, twitter, places, ibooks, simplist, dropbox, hipstamatic.)

can’t wait to hear about all your favorites! {smooches & hugs} bonnie

  • yay!

    my votes go to:
    photoshop (free) photo editing
    instagram

i’m scared of the paypal app, to be honest haha…if my phone gets stolen, i don’t want someone to be able to access that :-/

  • oops, hit the submit button too soon. ;-D meant to say that square is amazing for taking payments, way more streamlined than paypal and their UI is fantastic.

  • I don’t have an iphone, but I do have an ipod that has wifi, so I use it a lot :) I love instagram. It’s a photo app. You can take pictures then you upload them to instagram… you also have the option of synching it to other social networking sites like twitter, FB, Flickr… Here’s an example. A picture of my little man that :) http://instagr.am/p/BatSf/

  • erin: WOW! that’s amazing! would be so perfect for craft shows and selling on the fly. i will definitely be using it.

amy: done! downloaded and posted my very first photo: http://instagr.am/p/Bh-sb/

    thank you!!

  • Some apps I love…drop box, it syncs folders from work and home that I put in drop box, and I can access them on the go from my phone, another is coupon sherpa, I just take a look at it if the store I’m in has any coupons this week and then I just show the clerk my phone. Have fun with your phone!

  • hi bonnie! congrats on the iphone! some of my favorite apps are:
-blogging: wordpress app, evernote allows you to remember notes of any kind- images, audio, written– and there’s a free app for your desktop too! super handy.
-twitter: tweetdeck is my favorite– and it let’s you have multiple accounts and uploading pictures (great for cute puppy shots) is really easy.
-more face time: the new (and free!) skype app let’s you face time…great for long-distance moms!
-easy building: the iLevel app is great and very useful
-photography: hipstamatic is fun, but slow. i love instagram (and it uploads easy to FB/twitter) and also camera bag for cool lenses …make sure to grab the flickr app too
-music: there is a ‘this american life’ app for like $3 that has EVERY episdoe. so awesome. and the NPR app itself is great.
-art: the wall painter app allows you to take a picture of a wall then play around with paint colors. joann fabrics has an app that sends you scannable coupons.
-font: what the font allows you to take a picture of a font and then it tells you what it is. AMAZING.
-travel: the southwest app sends you alerts for deals for your “favorite” airports…kayak lets you search airline prices on-the-go.
-pups: the dog park app let’s you know when you’re near a park.

ok, i think that’s it :)have fun!

  • Pulse is an amazing app! It allows me to follow your blog and brose my other favorites at one time! :) All your blogs will appear on one page vertically and each individual blog has the last 5 or so post that you can scroll through horizontally. Bottom line…it’s a MUST-have app!!!

  • You would love the yoga app! I’m not sure what it’s specifically called though. Also, iSamadhi is a great meditation timer & journal.

I think those are just as important as business-streamlining apps ;)

  • kim- got the photoshop one! love it. :)

sierra- you are so sweet! thank you so much for thinking about what i need and sharing so many AWESOME suggestions! this is acactly what i needed. i downloaded just about all of them!

sarah- pulse sounds awesome! setting it up now, it will be so useful for all my daily reads!

katie- i got a yoga app! but i thought it was going to audibly take me through the poses and i don’t think it does. does yours? and you are right, they are just as important!

  • my head is spinning….but I can’t wait to get mine!

  • There is an etsy app that I use on mine! It works pretty well to help you keep up with your etsy page!!

  • I just got my iphone the other day too! I’m still looking for a good Etsy app but the app that I am playing with the most is Instagram. Addictive! I also go Square for craft shows. Can’t wait to start using it. Have fun with your phone!

  • Congrats on the iPhone, Bonnie! I have had mine for a few months and am still finding the amount of apps out there overwhelming.
If you’re mom and hubby both have iphones, I would totally Whatsapp, which allows you to text, send photos and images and more for free!
Thanks to all the suggestions here, I am now going to go and install some new apps. :-)

  • I love the hipstagram app and got the tip to edit the setting so the camera app shot what I see in the window. Easier to use that way. I also got the tip to look at when the app was updated the last time. Even when an app has great reviews, if it’s not been updated since last summer, they probably will not and one should be on the lookout for a newer type.
photo – I like “classic pan” for landscape and “best camera” for shoot and easy, simple editing. There’s a video on youtube showing how it works.
flickr works great for me, and “blog press”
I’ve also got the “run keeper” and “nike+ gps” for my walks+runs, but use the runkeeper the most for now.
books- “kindle” for books from amazon (nice on the go).

  • Thaks for this post, I’m gonna check out some of these apps that are mentioned!
    Have a fabulous day!

  • Oh you will LOVE your new phone. Here are my tips:

    * Hipstamatic is THE best photo app. there was an update some days ago and now it’s fast :-) you should really check it out.
    * Another great app is Awesome Notes. You can make lots of lists, set goals, it reminds you of your tasks (if you want to) and it’s beautifully designed. Essential for me.
*Another super photo app is Shake It Photo. The photos you take with the app are developed into a Polaroid picture with sound and shaking. Lots of fun.
    * Shazam “saved” my life several times. When you sit in the car, radio turned on, there is this new song you love and you don’t know who sings it… tag the song with Shazam and it instantly tells you singer and track name. Seems like magic to me. And it’s for free.
    * And one more. Gratitude. a beautiful little app where you can track the things you’re grateful for. It will NOT displayed anywhere, it’s just for yourself. Oprah says it improves your life. I think that’s right. :-)

If you want you can check out a post that i’ve written a year ago. It’s about my 10 favorite apps (by this time)
    http://happyserendipity.com/multimedia/favorite-10-iphone-apps

And just 2 weeks ago i designed some chevron iPhone wallpapers for free download.

Have fun Bonnie and a lovely weekend.

  • Thanks Bonnie. Mine arrives today – in the remote town I’m moving to!!! These app descriptions are going to be brilliant for me too.

  • lou, thank you so much for all these wonderful recommendations! i especially love idea for the gratitude one. :) also, thanks for sharing your links! love that wallpaper!

  • I am not a blogger, so the most fun app that I have is the hipstogram. I love playing with all the different films and lenses. :D

  • Ohh you will LOVE your iphone! I dont know what I did without mine. My favorite app is intuition! It it beyond amazing and is FREE! It is essentially a personal assistant app to keep me organized. What I like about it best is I can make grocery lists and cross off items on the phone when I purchase them! It saves the lists to reuse in the future. It is awesome. It also comes programed with a lot of items but you can add anything. it also can sync with your iphone calender and it also links to local coupons. I highly recommend it! :)

  • sarah, thank you so much for the suggestion! just downloaded it. :)
