this week i’ve been able to catch up on some reading, and one of my favorite books has been eating animlas by jonathan safran foer (recommended to me by beryl- thanks!). though i’m not but half way through it, i know that i can already recommend it to you, as it has taught me so much already. i’m sure i’ll cover it in greater detail once i’m finished, but today i wanted to share with you just one part that has engaged in me much thought.
“… most people agree that the environment matters. whether or not you are in favor of offshore oil drilling, whether or not you “believe” in global warming, whether you defend your hummer or live off the grid, you recognize that the air you breathe and the water you drink is important. and that they will be important to your children and grandchildren. even those who continue to deny that the environment is in peril would agree that it would be bad if it were.”
to me, this passage gives me hope. a common ground on which all of us agree. a starting point. it makes me feel less hopeless about misunderstandings and under-educations, and more hopeful because we all really do care. we must. it simply looks different on every person, and every person cares in different ways.

That IS a nice thoght. Now if you could just show that to all our politicians and remind them that we all have common ground, maybe they would play nice!
I wish I thought everyone agreed on this issue. Then it would make me feel more like what I’m doing to help isn’t in vain. But standing outside on my porch the other day, picking some greens from our planters, I saw a woman nonchalantly throw some garbage into the protected wetlands behind my house. I was shocked and stood there holding my arugula in disbelief for a few minutes before I went inside to stew and vent to my hubs. I had thought we had gotten through the message about littering in the ’90s. But here we were…
hey jess! i get what you’re saying, and i would be shocked as well. but this woman sounds like one of the people who “continues to deny that the environment is in peril, but would agree that it would be bad if it were.” i bet if you asked her if she cared about the air she breathed and water she drank, if she was truthful she would say yes. it’s just that she doesn’t see or know that it’s in jeopardy. so what gives me hope, is that i (have to) believe that everyone really does care, they’re just not convinced that they need to care yet. that lightens the load slightly, as we now just need to teach them about what state the environment is in! am i making any sense??
Yeah, I could see that. I need to pick up that book!

this reminds me of the wonderful podcast I heard this weekend…On Being with Krista Tippett. this one speaks of a love for the earth and that we are at a turning point. I highly recommend listening…
