stargazing is one of my most favorite things to do. this past december, i was able to see the brilliant geminid meteor shower, and it’s something i’ll never forget! husband and i bundled up in sleeping bags and watched for about an hour as the stars darted across the sky. this year, i’m determined not to miss any of the big stargazing events, so i made a list and turned it into a little printable for us! 14 stargazing events in 2013 printable

1) january 21 — very close moon/jupiter conjunction. a waxing gibbous moon (78% illuminated) will pass within less than a degree to the south of jupiter high in the evening sky. your closed fist held out at arms length covers 10 degrees. these two won’t get that close again until 2026.

2) february 2-23 — best evening view of mercury. the planet mercury will be far enough away from the glare of the sun to be visible in the western sky after sunset. it will be at its brightest on the 16th and dim quickly afterwards. on the 8th it will skim by the much dimmer planet mars by about 0.4 degrees.

3) march 10-24 — comet panstarrs at its best. first discovered in 2011, this comet should be coming back around for about 2 weeks. it will be visible low in the northwest sky after sunset.

4) april 25 — partial lunar eclipse. a very minor, partial lunar eclipse (not visible in north america) where only about 2 percent of the moon’s diameter will be inside the dark shadow of the earth.

5) may 9 — annular eclipse of the sun (“ring of fire” eclipse). it will be visible in northern australia and parts of papua new guinea but mostly within the pacific ocean.

6) may 24-30 — dance of the planets. mercury, venus and jupiter will seemingly dance between each other in the twilight sky just after sunset as they will change their positions from one evening to the next. venus will be the brightest of all, six times brighter than jupiter.

7) june 23 — biggest full moon of 2013. it will be the biggest full moon because the moon will be the closest to the earth at this time making it a ‘supermoon’ and the tides will be affected as well creating exceptionally high and low tides for the next few days.

8) august 12 — perseid meteor shower. one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year producing upwards of 90 meteors per hour provided the sky is dark. this year the moon won’t be in the way as much as it will set during the evening leaving the rest of the night dark.

9) october 18 — penumbral eclipse of the moon. visible mostly in asia, europe and africa, at this time the 76% of the moon will be covered by the penumbral shadow of the earth.

10) november 3 — hybrid eclipse of the sun. a hybrid eclipse meaning, along its path, the eclipse will turn from annular to total and in this case most of the path will appear to be total as there will be a slight ring of sunlight visible near the beginning of the track. this one will begin in the atlantic (near the east coast of the u.s.) and travel through africa.

11) november 17-18 — leonids meteor shower. this is one of the better meteor showers to observe, producing an average of 40 meteors per hour at their peak. the shower itself has a cyclic peak year every 33 years where hundreds of meteors can be seen each hour. the last of these occurred in 2001.

12) mid-november through december — comet ison. the second comet this year, ison, could potentially be visible in broad daylight as it reaches its closest point to the sun. it will reach that point on november 28 and it is close enough to the sun to be categorized as a ‘sungrazer’. afterwards it will travel towards earth (passing by within 40 million miles) a month later.

13) all of december — dazzling venus. the brightest planet of them all will shine a few hours after sundown in the southwestern sky and for about 1.5 hours approaching new years eve. around december 5th, a crescent moon will pass above the planet and the next night venus will be at its brightest and wont be again until 2021.

14) december 13-14 geminid meteor shower. this is another great (if not the best) annual meteor shower. this year put on a show at about 120 meteors per hour and in 2013 it won’t be much different so expect another fantastic show. however, the moon – as it is a few days before full phase – will be in the way for most of the night obscuring some of the fainter meteors. You might have to stay up in the early morning hours (4am) to catch the all the meteors it has to offer.

adobe illustrator keyboard shortcuts

i use shortcuts while working in adobe illustrator constantly, and find that it’s an incredible time saver! it makes things easier, quicker and more streamlined. however, it can be really hard to learn shortcuts for any new program (just put me working in photoshop and i’m lost!). that’s why i really like these keyboard shortcut guides. you can use them to refer to, or set them as your desktop background to keep them handy at all times.

planted mugs + printable tags

planted mugs + printable tags

printable plant tags

yesterday, i was so inspired after seeing these planted mugs over on design*sponge, that i decided to make some myself, as well as design some gift tags to go along with them! i was looking for a gift idea that was sweet, affordable and memorable – and voila. thanks design*sponge!

planted mugs + printable tags

each planted mug only cost me $6 to make (can i get a woot woot?!). here’s what you need:

supplies:

- any type of mug – i grabbed mine from target for $3 a piece
- small plants to fit inside – i got mine from lowes for $2.98 a plant
- a few pebbles or rocks (you can usually just find some outside!)

directions:

first fill the bottom of each mug with a few pebbles, then simply place your plant in the mug and pack down the dirt around it. you may find it helpful to loosen the roots before you insert the plant.

another nice touch is to add a gift tag and a small bag of your favorite coffee, tea or mulling spices. i went ahead and made these tags a printable for you, so you can use them as well! just fill out the back with the plant instructions so that the recipient will know how to take care of the plant. i punched a hole in the tea bag and tag and tied it up onto a twig (stuck in the soil) using baker’s twine.

just click on the image above to download and print these gift tags to go along with your planted mugs. have fun!

printable cooking envelope

December 12, 2012

hey guys! i’m so excited to welcome back the most lovely abigail page as a contributor for going home to roost! after taking a short hiatus to get hitched (you should see their wedding website!) abigail is back and will be popping in each month with a pretty printable for you. i hope you’ll enjoy these and join me in saying, welcome back abigail! we’ve missed you. :) xo, bonnie

cookie envelopes-1-4

Handmade gifts can be some of the best – especially when they’re edible! However, there just seems to be something wrong with loads of gorgeous holiday cookies that represent hours and hours of baking… on a plain paper plate with green plastic wrap. These festive cookie envelopes are the perfect way to present just the right amount of sweet to your favorite recipients.

These can be printed on any lighter color of card stock, and the liner can be made ideally from wax paper (more detailed instructions are on the printables themselves). The closure is where it can get really fun – buttons, ribbons, and washi tape are what I used but I would love to do some with yarn pom-poms, big stickers… it’s really endless. One tip – flat cookies that are less than three inches in diameter work best with these envelopes. If you try to put a very round cookie in there it might not close all the way. Four tiny cookies would also be a really cute option.

I used this recipe for red velvet crinkle cookies that you can find on my blog here.

printable christmas gift list

each year i print out a little christmas gift list to help keep all the gifts i buy/make for others organized. this way, i can see what i’m giving everyone and make sure i don’t forget anything! this year, i’ve also added a ‘wrapped’ check box, just to make sure everything arrives in the mail and gets put under the tree.

printable christmas gift list

i begin each year by jotting down the ideas i have for everyone (in pencil). then, as i purchase (or make) each item, i put a check mark in the box labeled ‘bought’. then, i check them off one more time as i wrap them just to be sure nothing gets forgotten. i also usually jot down the price next to the item, so i can keep track of what i spend each year!

printable christmas gift list

because there’s nothing worse than having a loved one find your gift list, i’ve added an optional ‘side 2′ to this printable. to use, just turn your piece of paper over and print these two ‘no peeking’ labels on the back. fold from top to bottom, then right to left and the labels will show on both sides when your list is folded.

i hope this helps keeps your holidays organized! love, bonnie

p.s. don’t worry mom, this isn’t actually what i’m getting you!
