the darling magazine

the darling magazine

i recently discovered darling magazine from my friend natalie who is a managing editor for them, and instantly fell in love with their mission and voice. it’s a different kind of magazine. it’s not only incredibly artful and clean but it’s full of thought provoking, meaningful articles written by intelligent women. it’s a breath of fresh air.

the magazine comes out ever 3 months and is full of wisdom and inspiration for ever element of your life. photos are never photoshopped and women are always shown in their true beauty. you can see their mission statement above.

the darling magazine

head on over to darling magazine to read about beauty, healthy eating and engage in discussions on true femininity. here are a few of their most popular articles: photoshopping our souls away, i don’t want to compete anymore, redefining beauty, healthy vs. skinny, and the naked brunch.

we’ve been on quite the movie kick lately (i.e. we’re tired of summer programming) so i thought i’d share some of my latest favorites with you. have you seen anything good lately?

summer 2012 movies

1. the hunter – one of our favorites- an unpredictable storyline that the men will enjoy as well.
2. the hunger games – i just finished reading the series, so of course. :)
3. born to be wild – adorable, educational and very entertaining (and short!).
4. salmon fishing in the yemen – a fly fishing love story.
5. sarah’s key – one for a more serious kind of evening.
6. the lucky one – beautiful and romantic (and david survived it alright).
7. wanderlust – funny and light hearted (for the hippy in you).
8. the vow – sad and happy all at the same time.

chad mackey

hello, friends! today, i’m so excited to introduce to you one of my favorite singer/songwriters, chad mackey. i’m lucky enough to know him personally (and his super crafty wife!) and know that you’re just going to fall in love with his music!

last time we were visiting north carolina, chad gave david and i a copy of his latest album, and i simply can’t stop listening to it. chad has a country-rock-happy vibe going on that is so uplifting and fun to listen to!

he hails from my most favorite city on earth, asheville, nc and plays there often. if you ever find yourself in the area, you must go see him and his band! you can keep up with all of their upcoming shows here.

above are two of my favorite songs ‘late summer‘ and  ‘God proved me wrong‘ – go ahead and have a listen!

chad mackey

chad just released his latest acoustic album, just another local: an acoustic project (available in itunes). you are definitely going to want to get to know this ‘local’. :)

happiness happens month

i couldn’t help but share this with you- not only is today happiness happens day, but the entire month of august is happiness happens month!

what is happiness happens month you say? well, it’s all about declaring your happiness and what it is that makes you happy. awesome, right?!

in celebration, i would like each of us to declare one thing that makes us happy. i’ll go first:

i am a happy person and one thing that makes me happy is snuggling with my sweet puppy, toaster.

so, my dear friends, what makes you happy? i’ll meet you in the comments section!

thank goodness for google calendars, else i would have never realized that this year is already half way over! back in january i posted a list of goals for 2012 and wanted to do a little check in to see where i’m at with them. though it looks like i have a ways to go, there’s nothing like publicly announcing your goals, it’s such a motivator! i would love to hear yours as well. :)

12 thoughts and goals for 2012:

1) start a garden at our new place.

2) keep focused on communication with all of my friends and family across the states. work in progress!

3) get my dad out to california.

4) start soaking my own beans and sprouting my own sprouts.

5) continue to educate myself on the subjects that are near to my heart (food, health and creative endeavors). work in progress!

6) continue to put God first. in my time, my day, our finances, and in every way.

7) get back into my yoga routine.

8) submit a design portfolio to the fabric company of my dreams.

9) start saving above our norm, in efforts to prepare for a home and family in the coming years.

10) practice presence. life flies by to quickly. not sure that i will ever cross this one out!

11) visit bend, the grand canyon, lake tahoe and santa cruz.

12) nourish my creativity. work in progress!

how are your goals for 2012 coming?

things i'm afraid to tell you

well, here goes…

to start, i fell in love with this movement when i first heard about it on creature comforts. started by jess constable and kicked off by the lovely ez, i was eager to share my part.

to be honest, it’s something i’ve thought about for a long time. the idea is that most bloggers don’t share the ugly, nitty gritty side of things, but rather focus on the more lovely side of life. and, why not? the sole purpose of many blogs is to inspire! however, the issue that arises is that sometimes posting such constant and beautiful content may leave the reader feeling defeated, rather than inspired. is that ever true for you? i know it is for me.

many times i’ll get comments about people being jealous or envious over something i’ve written about. i know that it’s really a nice thing to say, but it’s just never settled well with me. it makes me feel almost guilty that something i post would make someone feel envious, because the feeling i hope to invoke is inspiration, not jealousy. i’ve even toyed with the idea of doing a point and shoot post dedicated to the ugly side of things. :)

the point is, i do live a beautiful life. but, it’s because i choose to see the beauty in the little things, and not focus on the not-so-pretty stuff. i believe anyone can do that! i choose to be inspired by the weather, the flowers, the birds and the bees. but if i were to focus on the less than beautiful stuff i would share with you my laundry, the dog hair underneath my sofa, my toenails that need to be painted and the piles of dirt that always seem to appear on my windows.

we don’t have much money. in fact, we struggle constantly just to pay the bills. that’s why i have to be inspired by the less expensive things in life. our heater usually doesn’t work and most days i have to heap on clothing just to keep warm. toaster is smelly and i swear needs a bath more frequently than any other dog i’ve met.

now that that’s out of the way, here’s what i’m really afraid to tell you:

- i’m overwhelmed. sometimes i feel like i just can’t keep up. everytime i browse the web i see bigger and better blogs and artists doing bigger and better things. sometimes i just have to shut it all off and focus on one task at a time, but i still lose sleep over it.

- sometimes i wonder if you read what i write. if it matters and if it’s interesting. or even if you like me or want to genuinely invest in me as the person behind going home to roost.

- i’m confused on my next step. i’m trying to get a new business going and don’t know what to do next. i feel like i’m staring at a blank piece of paper and can’t put my pencil to it and start drawing. sigh.

- i miss my family. deeply.

- i worry if i ever offend you. i go back and forth on whether or not to share my more personal feelings, especially when it comes to my belief in and love for Jesus Christ.

- i don’t have the best grammer, and i don’t really care.

- sometimes i debate on the direction for going home to roost. what’s the perfect mix of personal, helpful information, handmade goods and freebies? i get weary of posting about products, because i think we already live in a ‘more more more’ world. i want to help fill you up from the inside out, without the need for material possessions.

- and, i love you. sometimes i don’t know if i tell you enough or if it comes across to you as deeply as it is felt within me. i don’t know most of you, but i feel connected to you in a beautiful way. you are what makes this possible and i love writing to you every day. in fact, i’d like to hear from you much more often.

whew! that felt so good, i may have to make it a regular column. it was also hard to write. i don’t want to come off as ungrateful, because i am quite the opposite. i am incredibly blessed by you and honored that you would visit my world.

love and light to each of you! xoxo, bonnie

need to get a few things off your chest? we would all love for you to participate! visit this post to see everyone who has participated thus far and be sure to share your story with us here in the comments sections. i would truly love to read it.

**update! since writing this, i’ve posted a little appreciation post. i am so thankful for all your sweet comments!**
