with feather mugs and tumbleweed cups, vanessa villarreal’s hand-built ceramics had me at hello. wouldn’t an eclectic collection of these make for the most darling dinner set?

as i scrolled through cynthia vardhan ceramics, i couldn’t help but be amazed that i had never run across it before. an absolute delight for the eyes, cynthia starts at the beginning with each of her pieces. after making them by hand on her potter’s wheel, she mixes her own translucent glaze and signature custom colors. she then painstakingly hand decorates each of them with pigmented clay- all of which helps give the pieces their distinctive raised patterns and visual depth. inspired by patterns from bali to west africa, each have a story to tell of their own. i love the beautiful vibrancy of the colors, the unique shape of the vases, and the feminine daintiness of them all!

learning to work with ceramics and pottery has long been on my to-do list (along with 100 other ‘do before i die’ crafts). i even have a lonesome kiln just sitting in my pottery shed (currently turned random-garden-tools shed). someday when i when i pass a clay supplier, i’ll decide it was fate that brought me there, gather lots of supplies and see what i can do with it. and when i do, i think jill rosenwald’s style is exactly what my mission would be. what a modern, breath of fresh air style she brings to pottery! the colors soothe the soul and i’d be one happy camper eating off one of her plates, sipping tea out that beautiful mug..
