quilt market recap!

October 30, 2014

bonnie christine | fall quilt market 2014 (5)

hello, friends! we’ve just returned from quilt market and we had such a wonderful time. i’m so happy to be a part of this amazing community- i think quilters and sewers just have the sweetest spirits! being a part of art gallery fabric‘s family is so special, too. everyone is incredibly supportive, creative and energetic. AGF also won the 2nd place award for multiple booth design during the show. it is one happy place to be!

since i was debuting two new collections (cultivate and hello, bear), i was able to have two booths! we spent the entire day on thursday setting up, attended the ever-so-crazy sample spree thursday night, and then welcomed thousands of sewists to the show friday, saturday and sunday. i was able to meet so many wonderful people (hugs to you if you’re one of them!) and came away with some exciting opportunities in the works, as well.

above is my booth for cultivate- a new flower garden inspired fabric line that will ship in april, 2015 (just in time to start gardening!).

for this booth, we had a moss manikin, sunhat, dreamy quilt, kneeling board, fabric covered keds shoes and more. all of these projects will be popping up on going home to roost over the next several months, i’m sure!

hello, bear is my special edition children’s line inspired by my son, bear, of course! it will begin shipping in january, and i can’t wait to start making more projects with it. it’s not only for children, as i have several home decor and women’s clothing projects i want to make with it as well!

for this booth, we made a bean bag, cloud pillow, feather headdress, triangle quilt, a few stuffed animals and more. it was so much fun seeing it all come to life!

lastly, i had a Q&A session with the roost tribe this week regarding tradeshows. here are just a few of the questions we discussed (you can join the roost tribe to receive the full session!).

What is your check list of things to bring when you exhibit?

oh my, so many things! but, on the top of my list:

– all samples
– promo materials: biz cards, postcards, flyers
– booth supplies: staple gun, glue gun, double sided table, hooks, small nails, vinyl decals and paint (depending on the project)
– comfy shoes and clothes to set up and break down in!
– notebook for taking notes and orders
– paypal or square iphone attachment to swipe for payments

In your opinion or from your personal experience what makes a successful booth/exhibit at a trade show?

it’s always important to be present in your booth. you could miss a great opportunity if you’re not there! clearly showing your work and having something for a potential buyer to take with them is also a great way to be memorable.

How do you decide how to decorate your booth? Do you have a sewing marathon leading up to Quilt Market to have samples to show?

ideas for the booth are always based around the inspiration for the collection (hello, bear = children’s woodland theme | cultivate = gardening). it’s so much fun! and, yes! we usually get fabric 2-3 weeks before market, so as soon as it arrives the sewing marathon begins!

winged grand giveaway (2)

before we get to the fun part, i wanted to share with you a little about the inspiration behind the collection.

forever and ever i have always noticed the very first butterfly each spring. it has been one of the sweetest sightings for me each year. it means a new season is upon us, warmer weather is on it’s way and fresh blooms will be emerging from the ground. it also evokes this feeling within me of inspiration- like all things are possible. the butterfly’s journey from caterpillar to butterfly is one that i’ll never stop marveling at.

this feeling of spreading one’s great wings and soaring is one that connects with me deeply. a long time ago i decided that i would pursue my dreams no matter what. i would make great sacrifices, journey into the unknown put my heart and soul on the line to live my creative dream.

that is what winged is about. spreading your wings and flying into the unknown.

announcing: hello, bear!

September 24, 2014

hello, bear by bonnie christine (1)

today i get to share with you my new special edition fabric line called hello, bear for art gallery fabrics. inspired by my son, bear, i’ve developed a children’s fabric line that will easily cross over into adult projects as well. i’m calling it ‘special edition’ because i’m releasing two lines at once (oh yes!). the follow up collection to winged is called cultivate, but i’ll share more about that with you later. :)

hello bear by bonnie christine

hello, bear tells a meaningful story of adventure and wonder. i’ve been so inspired by seeing the wilderness through a new set of eyes, that i couldn’t help but start designing on these motifs. the collection is filled with woodland finds, creatures, hills and trees. i hope it will let you wander for a bit and explore a new world where dreams become reality. it will start shipping in january!

hello, bear by bonnie christine (2) the first colorway is called stone. it’s boyish but softened with a beautiful mint, peachy orange and teal. i can’t wait to get my hands on the little arrow print and stag head!

hello, bear by bonnie christine (3)

the second colorway is called timber and is softened with peach hues to truly make it a universal collection. i can see little dresses, crib sheets, handbags and throw pillows made from it.

what would you like to make from hello, bear?

one of the most exciting parts of releasing a new fabric collection is the beautiful lookbook that follows. with several projects, my sister as a model and our cameras in hand we headed out to the local forest to shoot images for winged. you can see several of the photos here and even more by viewing the the winged lookbook!

psst. visit yesterday’s post to see pattern images and read all about the inspiration for this collection.

winged is now available!

winged by bonnie christine (11)

today is a happy day. my new fabric collection winged for art gallery fabrics is arriving today in stores everywhere! for this post, i want to share with you more about the collection and my inspirations behind it. tomorrow i’ll be sharing with you the newly released lookbook and several projects made with the collection. fun FUN fun fun fun!

forever and ever i have always noticed the very first butterfly each spring. it has been one of the sweetest sightings for me each year. it means a new season is upon us, warmer weather is on it’s way and fresh blooms will be emerging from the ground. it also evokes this feeling within me of inspiration- like all things are possible. the butterfly’s journey from caterpillar to butterfly is one that i’ll never stop marveling at.

winged by bonnie christine (1)

wingspan melon | flyaway petalums vert

winged by bonnie christine (2)

mimicry beryl | bird’s peck jade

design note: mimicry was created via a happy accident. by enlarging up all the bits and pieces that make up the butterfly’s wings, mimicry was born. it turned out to be one of my favorite prints!

winged by bonnie christine (5)

aves chatter shine | plumage apricot

design note: while i was sitting at my desk one day a flock of birds landed in a nearby tree. i grabbed my camera, ran outside and started taking pictures up in the sky. i’m sure i looked like a barefoot lunatic! this is how aves chatter was created. each bird represents an actual bird i saw behind my camera.

winged by bonnie christine (7)

nesting blooms cool | frilly flutters creme

winged by bonnie christine (9)

metamorphosis quartz | feathered flight acorn

design notes: metamorphosis is my take on the beautiful butterfly cocoon. hanging from a branch these layers will soon fade away and a butterfly’s wings will unwrap and start to fly!

winged by bonnie christine (3)

wingspan fig | flyaway petalums sky

design note: i was nervous to include this dark plum color on wingspan. however, i have deeply fallen in love with the figgy color! that’s just to say that taking risks sometimes pays off.

winged by bonnie christine (4)

mimicry hazel | bird’s peck dahlia

winged by bonnie christine

nesting blooms warm | frilly flutters mist

design note: these nesting blooms were inspired by a real flower i photographed while living in california. i love how the nest together- as though they were drifting down a lazy river.

winged by bonnie christine (10)

metamorphosis coral | feathered flight sunken

you can find winged by checking your local quilt or fabric shop, or by checking these online stores.

you can also head on over to art gallery fabric’s blog to enter to win a full fat quarter stack of this entire collection!

wall of fabric

June 16, 2014

wall of fabric! (1)

as our home starts to come together, i’m excited to share more and more of it with you. spring fever has hit and i’ve been checking off several projects i’ve been thinking about for a long time. this one may be my favorite. :)

for every fabric collection i design, i’m over-the-moon-excited to receive a bolt of each piece. seriously, when i get this package in the mail i leap for joy! i use this fabric for marketing, giveaways, blog hops, sample sewing and of course a few personal projects as well! it also leaves me with bundles of bolts, and along with it, a bit of a storage dilemma.

a wall of fabric! (3)

storage dilemma solved! i’ve been staring at this blank wall behind my workspace for a year. the steps lead up to my sewing room, so when the ideas struck to hang my fabric i couldn’t resist! now it doubles at artwork and doesn’t take up any floor space in my tiny sewing room.

a wall of fabric! (1)

i know there are probably not very many of you who have bolts and bolts of fabric like this, but you could always roll your fabric around a tube to store it in the same way. to hang them, i drilled holes in the bottom of 1.5″ wooden round discs (like this) and strung twine up through the center of the tube (a knot in the bottom holds the disc in place). i then used super hooks to hang them- those things are amazing!

wall of fabric! (2)

also shown here are my favorite new hexagon shelves and some faux white taxidermy.
