tastes orangey

“A warm bath, a cool day
your heavy arms collapse
a place both near and far away
is tiled with slippery traps.
Be careful when you leave the tub
the steam is rising tall
no matter how you grasp and pull
your towel is bound to fall.”

“We lay content in the warm light of afternoon.
The world may tell us there’s no time to nap, but we will show the world.”

“Between Two Ferns,
but not as funny
we lie in bed, you call me honey
we laugh because we don’t have money
I pinch your nose and it is runny!”

i could immediately tell that there were a couple of love bunnies behind this shop, as it oozes cutesy romance, love and happy poems! you can tell that the adorable clare and her husband-to-be kai have a sweetness about them, which shows up through their work. visit tastes orangey to see more of clare’s sewn paintings and windy lane studio to see her fiance’s beautiful work- even a portrait of her!

charmain olivia

charmaine olivia is a self-taught san franciscan artist, and the way she perfectly portrays these painted ladies speaks to me deeply.  showing emotions that can’t be put into words, i love the face she gives to each of them.

charmain olivia

in addition to her more colorful work, she draws the most beautiful and feminine silhouettes, and you can buy the originals right in her shop. with obvious nautical, woodland and native themes, i can’t even begin to pick my favorite!

make sure to visit her website where you can explore more of her work and along with her lovely blog.

furniture reno

October 6, 2010

Posted by in handmade, home decor

with our latest near-cross-country move, i’ve been thrift shopping like a mad woman.  our trailer was so small that all we were able to bring was our mattress and one measly chest of drawers.  since we haven’t any money and the closest ikea is over 10 hours away, the local thrift stores have come to know me by name (plus, they’re more fun anyways).  basically, our home is full of a mish mosh of mismatching wooden pieces. a table with mixed matched chairs, an old veneer topped desk, plenty of side tables and a new little vanity that i’ll be using as a sewing table.  can i be happy with the clashing wood? of course not! so i have my eye set on a number of furniture reno projects. mainly they consist of painting, staining and a little reupholstering.  shall i share with you some of my inspiration thus far?

my latest obsession? chevron

.

before and after from knack studios- what a beautiful winter gray color this is

floral tray table- since the hub and i like to eat at the couch, i bought two of these the other day, can’t wait to get them painted- i’m thinking in geometric squares..

knack studios- need i say anything?

stencil tricks- so excited to try some stenciling, but instead of words i’m planning to do some floral patterns.

knack studios- painted patina, in love with this algae/ mossy green!

craigslist before and after- lately i’ve had a thing for bold contrasts and geometrics, this dresser will do!

painting the floor - (told ya)

so dear ones, i should (hopefully) have some pretty before and after pictures to share with you in the coming weeks.  but for now, here’s my ‘to get’ list:

- primer

- paint

- hand sander

- drop cloth

- painter’s tape

- wood fill

- pretty wall paper (for drawers)

anything else? what am i missing? i’m no pro, so any advice, tips or tricks are MORE than welcome (especially when it comes to painting on veneer- help!)!

umberdove studio

i recently found kelly clark’s studio, umber dove, and fell in love with her paintings!  inspired by nature and little woodland creatures, the way she breathes life into each painting is so beautiful.  the soft pallets of color and unique patterns she applies to seemingly ordinary objects draw me in and make me want to know more. from a gal who admittedly wears too much turquoise and sings aloud while she paints, her artwork makes me want to know more about her, as well!

all things winged

don’t we love all things winged? i don’t think i’ve met anyone who hasn’t loved something that has wings.  i wonder why that i is?  i find them intriguing, wondrous creatures.  do you ever sit back and watch a bird fly?  when i stop and watch, i always imagine what it would feel like to be able to fly.  this shop is about insects and animals of flight, and i’m sure you’ll find something winged there you love!
