one question: why do you love being a surface pattern designer? the world of surface pattern design is bursting at the seams with sweet, beautiful and generous women (and men!). today you get to hear the answers from a few of them when i asked them one question: why do you love being a surface pattern designer?

if you long to join this fun, passionate, creative career path, be sure to RSVP for my 3 day course on surface pattern design here – it’s FREE to watch live!

note: this is the third installment for the countdown to my creativeLIVE course (you can click through to see the first part and second part). it starts in just 9 days!! (ah!)

one question: why do you love being a surface pattern designer? (2)

I love being a surface pattern designer because I get to spend my days creating, and making the world a more beautiful place. Hopefully putting a smile on someone’s face through my work and making life a little prettier. I love that I’m able to make a living off of my artwork — it’s an absolute dream come true. And I love it because it’s a world brimming with creativity and inspiration and a true sense of community. I feel like I’m at the heart of something really special. I feel like I’ve found my place in the world. - Elizabeth Olwen

one question: why do you love being a surface pattern designer? (3)

Creating individual, unique prints from concept to completion is artistically fulfilling. And though each design needs to stand on its own and be executed to its best result, it is the grouping of new designs to build a cohesive collection that I enjoy the most. Like casting a play, there should be clear chemistry between the characters. What that chemistry is exactly is unique to each designer—their special sauce. Though getting a collection to sing in harmony can take me back to the drawing board many times, I love the process of working that all out. I know in my gut when I’ve got it right. - Heather Bailey

one question: why do you love being a surface pattern designer? (4)

I love being a surface designer because some of my earliest memories are of hand-drawing patterns in sketchbooks and on posters — the fact that I can do for a living what I loved doing as a child is just amazing to me! Designing patterns brings me such joy and takes me straight back to childhood. - Jessica Swift

one question: why do you love being a surface pattern designer? (1)

Somewhere along the way I fell in love with repetition and pattern. I love the way objects can weave around each other to create a work that looks and feels entirely different from the original. Color and space are what I’m best at so it was a natural transition for me as an artist to move into surface pattern design. The added bonus is seeing where my patterns end up and how they’re used. I love designing for commercial ends and seeing how my work can transform an object, whether it be bedding, ceramics, or clothing is so much fun. - Leah Duncan

one question: why do you love being a surface pattern designer? (5)

there’s something so meaningful in the way we decide to color our worlds. i believe patterns are a way we can express ourselves, and make our spaces beautiful. whether it’s a favorite coffee mug, inspirational notebook or handmade baby quilt, i believe the patterns of our lives have the capacity to connect deeply within us. i love to interweave parts of my own life into each pattern, and so by viewing my work you have also viewed a part of my life and heart. - bonnie christine (of course, i had to add my own!)

10 tips for becoming a surface pattern designer by bonnie christine

i’m passionate about being surface pattern designer and sharing my story. i’m completely self taught and want to you to know that if being a surface pattern designer is a dream of yours, you can do it, too. today i’m sharing with you my top 10 tips for how to become a surface pattern designer. they are things that helped me a long the way and i believe in them wholeheartedly. if this gets you excited, be sure to RSVP for my 3 day course here – it’s FREE to watch live!

note: this is the second installment for the countdown to my creativeLIVE course (you can see the first bit here). it starts in just 17 days!! (ee!)

1) learn adobe illustrator. i know, that’s a big one! but you can do it. it’s big and scary but it’s just a computer program, right?! there are so many classes and resources around the web, and i’ll be teaching you everything you need to know about it during my course, surface pattern designs from scratch. don’t let the learning curve stop you from following your dreams!

2) make as many patterns as you can. once you start designing, use this precious early time to make as many patterns as you can. like, hundreds! these patterns are what will put your career in motion and many of them will end up being your all time favorites. cherish this ‘pre-pro’ time and use it wisely.

3) never throw anything away. don’t delete files, don’t toss sketches in the trash. someday they might just be exactly what you need!

4) build a community around your design. blog, tweet, facebook, instagram, pinterest. reach out to other SPD-ers.

5) be authentic. it’s easy to be incredibly inspired by looking around the web, but remember to never be ‘too’ inspired by someone else’s work. find your own personal style and stick with it. we can’t wait to see what you come up with!

6) do one thing every single day. this is my all time favorite motivational tip! whatever your dream may be- start doing one thing, however great or small every single day to move in the direction of your big dream.

7) have an amazing portfolio. pour your heart, your love and all your passion into this book.

8) tell a story. when designing patterns, think in terms of themes and story lines. run the theme throughout each pattern, the title of the collection, the names of each pattern and even the color names you choose.

9) have 10 seconds of courage. that’s all it takes to pick up the phone and call a company, introduce yourself to an art director or put yourself ‘out there’.

10) know that you can. you can do this. you really really can! all you have to do is decide to do it, no matter what it takes. it will take sacrifice, dedication and hard work but you CAN do it.

if you’re ready to do this thang you should go ahead and RSVP for my course here IT’S FREE to watch live, or you can purchase the course for lifetime, on-demand access!
