skip the paper towels

i haven’t bought a roll of paper towels in 5 years. many years ago when i started learning about our environment and what effect we have on it, i quickly felt a personal responsibility to reduce my impact. first on the list was to cut out any unnecessary items. what was first? paper towels! they are a convenience we simply can’t afford. we just don’t need ‘em. here are some quick statistics:

- americans send 3,000 tons of paper towels to landfills each day.

- 51,000 trees per day are required to replace the number of paper towels that are discarded every day.

- the paper industry is the third largest contributor to global warming.

ready for the solution? switch to cute cloth napkins and dish towels!

vintage napkins

if your household uses one roll of paper towels per week, you could save more than $100 per year by switching to dishcloths, tea towels and napkins. plus, how darling is it to hand out cute vintage napkins to your guests rather than paper towels?!

think you can make the switch?

vintage napkins:

{row 1: 60′s neon splash napkins, gray and burgundy napkins, vintage napkins}
{row 2: rust rose circa 1950, lime green linen dinner napkins, mod rust and brown linen napkins}
{row 3: turquoise and fruit napkins, vintage earthtoned colored napkins, linen harvest dinner napkins}

mengsel design

the definition of mengsel is mixture, which pretty perfectly describes this london based south african designer, luzelle van der westhuizen and her work. luzelle’s work is inspired by african and scandinavian design, and i just can’t get enough of her beautiful prints.  my favorites (of course) are the retro rooster and moka express designs, two of my favorite things!  be sure to visit her beautiful blog and website as well, you’ll find enough inspiration to last you all day!

the kitchen roost

February 19, 2010

i can’t believe it’s friday already! have you had a good week?  i feel like ours here has kind of been all over the place, but i’ve really enjoyed it and appreciate you hanging in there with me!  now for the news i’ve been wanting to share with you…

the kitchen roost

i opened a new etsy shop! haha, yes that’s right. feel free to whop me up side the head and ask, what are you doing?! i concluded that it was time to get all of my kitchen goods in one shop separate from the other, so alas, the kitchen roost was born!

to jump off the new shop, i’m also introducing a new line that i’m calling the organic kitchen. in addition to my usual aprons and tea towels, i’m now offering new tea towels, veggie produce bags and reusable shopping bags, all made from 100% organic cotton canvas. and, the appliques are all scraps leftover from aprons, so i’m saving those from heading to the dump.  what do you think?

i’ll be busy this weekend transferring all of my aprons and tea towels to the new shop, so when you’re looking for my kitchen goods, make sure to head to the kitchen roost! xoxo!

i am dorkas jewelrylately, i’ve been completely loving i am dorkas! marianna dorkas jamadi is a “finnish, indonesian, california born, brooklyn based, world bound, creative creature of anything but habit.”  that, i’ll agree with! her collaborative work with her mother on textiles and portuguese beau on jewelry have brought out influences from all over the world and into her stunning creations.

i am dorkas napkins and aprons

working with her mom on kitchen textiles has resulted in these stunning napkins, aprons and tea towels.  i love to see a family come together to create, and this collaborative, cultural adventure is a definite must see!
