green & grow

despite our pretty harsh winter this year, little sprouts of green are already popping up all around!  this will be our first spring living here and since my grandmother put her (very) green thumb to use while she lived here, i’m starting to get use to mysterious things popping up all around me.    i have big plans for our garden this year, and though both of my thumbs tend to be a bit brown, i’m giving it my best shot.  the weather was beautiful on tuesday so i got to start my seeds of tomatoes, onions, broccoli and brussel sprouts indoors.  next week will be eggplants and peppers- wish me luck!

and back by popular demand…

what do you eat in february?

February 11, 2010

it’s important to eat as local as you can, but what are you supposed to eat in february? when the only thing blooming is your desire for spring, it can be difficult to eat seasonally.  but, there are a few things that make deep winter delicious, and with this new column i’m naming ‘in season’, i hope give you lots of new ideas to eat locally- one season at a time!

brussel sprouts and omelet

with today’s recipes, i’m going to share with you my favorite way to eat brussel sprouts, and then what to do with the leftovers the next morning!  i made these sprouts earlier this week as a side with my dinner, and then yesterday morning made a delicious omelet from them!

brussel sprouts

i made the omelet with leftover sprouts, fresh local sliced apple and cheddar cheese. i’ve even made it before adding avocado and goat cheese- and it was so delicious!  since i didn’t have either of these yesterday, i left them out- but i encourage you to try it- yum yum yum!

here’s the recipe for fresh brussel sprouts & a delicious omelet!

rigel stuhmiller is a bay area artist working in printmaking, illustration, design, and storyboarding.  there’s just something about simple vegetables that gets me excited- not sure if it’s because i love to eat them, or because i love to plant them- but either way rigel’s prints are right up my alley!
