did you all have a good weekend?  i spent friday at home most of the day because it was snowing!  we’re having the longest/coldest temps since 1974- so i’ve been doing a lot of roosting.  saturday, however, david had a bike ride to attend in greenville, sc, so i bared the weather and went with him.  it was a balmy 3 degrees when we left- ah!  i found this adorable store called maymebaker studio while i was wandering the downtown streets, and ended up taking some pictures to share with you!  i must tell you about my sunday though first .. some of you may know that my mister, david, is in basic law enforcement training- and will be police officer in just a few weeks!  (i never thought i married the cop-kind- but he’s breaking the mold and doing so well at it!)  anyways, he took me to a shooting range yesterday and taught me how to shoot (i’ve never shot a gun in my  life- yikes!).  i’ve got mixed feeling about guns, not sure what i think most of the time, and generally, they scare me.  but i figured if i’m going to be married to someone who has to carry one everyday for his job- i might as well get comfortable with it.  so needless to say, we all survived.  it was 20 degrees and i was shaking, but managed to hit some pretty good shots on our make-do target (front page of a yoga magazine)!  ok- now to mayme baker:

this lamp hits you first thing when you walk in the door- swoon! it’s so beautiful!  i think my next major project might be to do something like it.  it was a bit flimsy to the touch- almost like it was done paper-mache style.  the post of the lamp itself looked wrapped as well.  i can’t get it out of my mind!

mb2

the store was set up exquisitely. every time i turned a corner i got lost in all the goodness!  this branch flows over one of the sections, with beautiful clay flowers hanging ever so softly from it.

mb3

the building itself led to an amazing set up with skylights and exposed beams and pipes.  hanging chandeliers brought it all to light.

mb5

this picture really stood out to me. it’s so simply yet represents such a story line.  this might be the next next project, as i was happy to find tons of etsians selling vintage keyholes!

mb4

wouldn’t this umbrella-holding owl look darling next to the front door? i wanted it so badly, but all i could do was drool in the pricey shop ($152 for this piece!).  i’ll be keeping my eye out for less expensive alternatives though- have you seen anything like this?
what did you do this weekend?

update!

well, i found the lamps!  stray dog has an array of beautiful lamps and other homewares- indeed paper mached!
working
i think i’ll still try to get creative, before i buy the mariana floor lamp for $535.00 us (is that bad? sort of what we talked about here, huh?). regardless, it’s nice to window shop these beauties!

happy friday!  just in case you have some down time this weekend, here are some fun projects from diy ideas nature inspired crafts segment.  i’m thinking that there are a ton of ways to use these downloads!

img_woodlandlg_ss2

they have used these downloads (below) to create an accordion style screen for the mantle.  i’m printing some of them right now! i think i’ll punch a hole in the top and tack them to my craft room wall until i figure out further what to do with them.  you could use them as art, a collage, or hang them vertically- similar to what they’ve done above.  p.s. i like the birds nest and moss downloads especially (not pictured above).

how to:

begin with four equal-size pieces of foam-core board. connect them with tiny craft hinges (available at your local crafts store). then use spray adhesive to attach color copies of the patterns below-or your own nature photographs, magazine images, or even floral fabrics.

download!

mushroom trio
pinecone close-up
fern fronds
moss
bird’s nest

cute again, but i’ve got my thinking cap on for other ways to use these prints! from there suggestion- heavier jars would make pretty bookends..

how to:

grab a few glass jars and old florist vases. download the images below, print and cut out. curl the papers inside the glass jars and put on display.

downloads!

mushroom group
leaf
seedpod

these gifts boxes are almost pretty enough to have just sitting around.  it would be nice to have some on hand for that surprise birthday i forgot about!

what are your ideas?

well, i’m off to finish my ‘surprise’- i’ll be back in later today to share with you what i’ve been working on!

weekend diy :: lovely packages

September 11, 2009

aren’t we always trying to find ways to use up our scraps? that last 4 inches of lace that we simply can’t throw away?  visit a few of these ideas below and you’ll be scrap-free in  no time!

gift wrapping

utterly engaged just released their 3rd issue, and this month they featured a great diy tutorial on beautiful gift wrapping and card making.

some extra inspiration? flickr photos show us the results of a pretty cool ‘lovely package swap‘. what a great idea!

i always try to use recycled, or otherwise landfill-bound goodies to wrap my gifts with (sorry everyone)- but by adding some fresh fabric scraps and some yarn or stickers- you can literally turn drab into fab!

do you have any ideas? share with us any tips or pics! hope to see you back here on monday! xo, bonnie

ok, so i’ve been spending a lot of time lately in the latest do it yourself magazine, and this last issue was full of things that made my ‘when i have time’ list a little longer.  i scanned a few pages to share (sorry about the fold) with you, maybe we’ll all get a little inspired to become that weekend warrior we always plan to be!

None-1is this not the loveliest work area you’ve ever seen?  they’ve taken an old crate and made it into a desk (probably in an afternoon), and used vintage drawers for those perfect organizers.

let’s dissect it a little further..

None-6

yes, simple cork rounds doll those boring (and cheap) shelves up and turn them into an ever so useful tack board.  i’m thinking sketches, to-do’s, cards.. and they are so much cuter than your usual cork board buy. my favorite part? with a glass cylinder, they’ve turned that ‘haven’t got to it yet yarn’ into not such a daunting piece of art.

None-5

ok, here’s where i get a little obsessed.  this wallpaper.  need i say more?  i have to have it.

have a lovely weekend and i hope to see you here in a few days!
